Release of New Orban Products

ORBAN CRL ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF TWO NEW OPTIMOD MODELS

Orban CRL introduces two NEW OPTIMOD Audio Signal Processors. The OPTIMOD-FM 5500 and FM-8600

OPTIMOD-FM 8600

The 8600 gives “dramatically improved” peak limiter technology that decreases distortion while increasing transient punch and high-frequency power handling. “Compared to the FM-channel peak limiter in Optimod-FM 8500, the new peak limiter typically provides 2.5 to 3 dB more power at high frequencies, which minimizes audible HF loss caused by pre-emphasis limiting. Drums and percussion cut through the mix. Highs are airy. ‘Problem material’ that used to cause audible distortion is handled cleanly.”

While this design offers the same loudness as 8500 processing, its main goal is to make FM analog broadcasts more competitive with the cleanliness, punch and open high frequencies of the digital media against which FM analog transmissions now battle.

The FM loudness wars were so 20th century; in the 21st century the new foe is digital media. Due to its fresh, crisp sound, the OPTIMOD-FM 8600 helps level the playing field between analog FM and it's ever more aggressive Digital-Only competitors.

For TBN’s OPTIMOD-FM 8500 customers we will offer an upgrade path to 8600 functionality. The upgrade will include a new DSP board and control module. Availability of upgrade will be by the end of 2010.

OPTIMOD-FM 5500

The 5500 is Orbans new value-oriented two-band and five-band audio processor that can also serve as a stand-alone stereo generator. It combines 5300 and 2300 functionality and adds several new features.

  • 10 MHz frequency reference input allows the pilot tone frequency to be locked to GPS or another high-accuracy frequency standard. This improves the performance of single-frequency networks in areas where coverage of the transmitters overlaps.
  • Cool-running switching power supply saves energy and reduces heat build-up in the chassis.
  • And lastly the use of the latest dual-core DSP chip technology from Freescale Semiconductor allows this model to be cheaper than the 5300 and 2300.

DELIVERY TIME
The first limited production units (manufactured in Germany) of the 5500 and 8600 will be available from June 2010.
